Painting for the Planet: A Guide to Low-VOC Paint
Editorial Team· PaintUp Studio· 30 July 2026
What VOCs actually are and why your choice of paint impacts both the environment and the air quality of your home sanctuary.
VOCs — volatile organic compounds — are the solvents that keep paint liquid in the can and evaporate as it cures. That “fresh paint smell” is the off-gassing you are breathing, and it continues at lower levels for weeks after the sheen has settled.
Reading the label correctly
In India, “low-VOC” is used loosely. Look for a stated figure: under 50 g/L qualifies as genuinely low, and under 5 g/L is near-zero. Tint also adds VOCs — a deep colour in a “zero-VOC” base can end up anything but.
- Bedrooms and nurseries: insist on sub-50 g/L emulsions
- Ventilate for 72 hours after completion, even with low-VOC systems
- Water-based enamels now match oil-based durability on trim and grills
Every product system in the PaintUp catalogue lists its VOC class, and our consultants will flag the low-emission alternative for any surface in your quote.
